the VOICES

2017

 

This piece is the second collaboration of May Zarhy with musician and vocal artist Michal Oppenheim. Together, they grouped a female ensemble of dancers and singers to explore the possible space between the materiality of movement and voice. 

Meditating on pre-language, this work focuses on the physicality of the torso and the internal organs, in a search for what can be felt rather than articulated. The cavity of the torso becomes the generator for movement as well as the sounding box for the human voice.
The outcome of this exploration is an alternative choir, which is not limited to singing, but one that choreographs itself between the realms of voice, body and vibration, creating a third entity, which is neither dance nor music, yet at the same time it is both. This piece is a synesthetic ritual, thriving on the mutual presence of the performers and spectators and their ancient, embodied knowledge of the primary need for song and dance.
